Compress the entire life of the universe into a single year. Every month equals 1.15 billion years. Every day equals 37 million years. Every second equals 438 years. Now look at where you stand.
The cosmic year<\/strong> 1st January, 00:00:00<\/strong> \u2014 the Big Bang. The universe explodes into existence. 22nd January<\/strong> \u2014 the first stars ignite. Light enters the cosmos for the first time. 16th March<\/strong> \u2014 the Milky Way is born. 2nd September<\/strong> \u2014 the solar system forms. The Sun begins to burn. 21st September<\/strong> \u2014 life appears on Earth. The first self-replicating molecules. 28th December<\/strong> \u2014 dinosaurs dominate the planet. 31st December, 23:59:46<\/strong> \u2014 Homo Sapiens appears. The last 14 seconds of 31st December<\/strong> \u2014 the entire written history of humanity. Every war, every empire, every discovery, every work of art, every revolution, every word ever spoken. The Renaissance<\/strong> \u2014 less than one second ago. You, right now, in this moment<\/strong> \u2014 an infinitesimal fraction of a second.
What human beings do in 14 seconds<\/strong> They build cathedrals. They write symphonies. They paint the Sistine Chapel. They reach the Moon. They decode DNA. They connect three billion minds in a single global network. And in these same 14 seconds \u2014 someone picks up a brush, lays pigment on a surface, and brings into existence something that was not there before. In 14 cosmic seconds, human beings transformed matter into meaning. This is the true measure of our power.
The paradox that changes everything<\/strong> We appeared yesterday on the cosmic clock. And yet we create objects that speak of eternity. And yet we ask questions about infinity. And yet we feel \u2014 deep inside, with absolute certainty \u2014 that we belong to something far greater than those 14 seconds. Perhaps the brevity of our cosmic presence is precisely the source of our creative intensity. We know \u2014 at an ancestral, cellular, quantum level \u2014 that time is short. And so we create with an urgency no other species has ever known.<\/strong>
The artist in the last second<\/strong> When I lay colour on canvas, I carry 13.8 billion years of universe with me. The matter I use has existed since the Big Bang. The atoms in the pigment have travelled through exploded stars, nebulae, forming planets, primordial oceans, living bodies. They have arrived here, in this studio, in this moment \u2014 in the last second of the cosmic calendar. The painterly gesture gathers all of this. A work of art is the point at which the universe looks at itself in the mirror.<\/strong> The only mirror it has ever built. Appearing in the last 14 seconds \u2014 yet capable of reflecting the whole of eternity.
Why this concerns you<\/strong> You are here now. In this infinitesimal fragment of cosmic time. And every choice you make, every thing you create, every connection you establish \u2014 happens in this most precious second that the universe spent 13.8 billion years preparing. Your life lasts a fraction of a cosmic second. Living it as though it lasts forever is the most revolutionary act there is.<\/strong>

Forse la brevit\u00e0 della nostra presenza cosmica \u00e8 esattamente la fonte della nostra intensit\u00e0 creativa. Sappiamo \u2014 a livello ancestrale, cellulare, quantistico \u2014 che il tempo \u00e8 breve. E allora creiamo con una urgenza che nessun’altra specie conosce.<\/strong>
L’artista nell’ultimo secondo<\/strong> Quando stendo il colore sulla tela, porto con me 13,8 miliardi di anni di universo. La materia che uso esiste dal Big Bang. Gli atomi del pigmento hanno attraversato stelle esplose, nebulose, pianeti in formazione, oceani primordiali, corpi viventi. Sono arrivati qui, in questo studio, in questo momento \u2014 nell’ultimo secondo del calendario cosmico. Il gesto pittorico raccoglie tutto questo. L’opera d’arte \u00e8 il punto in cui l’universo si guarda allo specchio.<\/strong> L’unico specchio che ha mai costruito. Comparso negli ultimi 14 secondi \u2014 ma capace di riflettere l’eternit\u00e0 intera.
